Omaha City Council

  • What does the Omaha City Council do?

The City Council is the city's legislative body. The City Council has the power to adopt, amend or repeal ordinances necessary to execute or make effective the provisions of the city charter.  In addition, the City Council has the power to adopt the budget, make or confirm appointments to city boards, provide for an independent audit and other necessary actions consistent with the charter.

  • Why should the public care?

The Omaha City Council is important to the individual and the public because it decides how the taxpayers’ money is being spent, determines how land will be used in neighborhoods around Omaha, legislates for local government, and has your representative to city government.

  • When and where do they meet?

The City Council meets most Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. in the Legislative Chambers located on the second level of the Omaha/Douglas Civic Center, 1819 Farnam Street.  The City Council does not meet during certain holiday weeks.

    • District 2: Juanita Johnson
    • District 3: Danny Begley
    • District 4: Vinny Palermo
    • District 5: Don Rowe
    • District 6: Brinker Harding

  • How are members selected?

Members are elected to four-year terms in the years after presidential elections. A non-partisan primary is held in February. Then, the top two primary candidates engage in a non-partisan election in May.  Members are sworn into office in June.

  • What is their policy on public comment?

All ordinances and resolutions on the City Council agenda receive a public hearing.  The City Council will hear from proponents and opponents of the item under consideration at the scheduled public hearing.  The timing of the public hearing depends on the item under consideration.  See the City Council agenda or call the Council office to confirm the public hearing dates.

Speakers will be asked for their name and address and affiliation (if any).
