About Us

Working to support local media and journalism innovation in the Omaha Metro area, the Omaha Institute for Nonprofit Journalism was formed in 2022 and has been recognized as a 501(c)3 by the IRS. OINJ aims to be both a local journalism lab and incubator, as well as a partner for local media seeking philanthropic support for important local journalism.

Programs We Support

Formed out of the team that ran Mind & Soul low-wattage community radio at the Malcolm X Memorial Birthsite, 1st Sky Omaha principals Paul B. Allen and Mark McGaugh now stream their news talk program 3 days a week, featuring news curation and local news making guests, engaging hundreds and reaching thousands.

From 100+ applicants, The Reader in Omaha was selected by Chicago-based journalism lab City Bureau to be in the first cohort for their official Documenters expansion. The largest citizen journalism initiative in the U.S., Documenters hires and trains individuals from the community to cover government meetings, using technology to increase access.
